Propulsion

The propulsion system of an ROV generally consist of a motor and propeller unit, usually an electric motor in a Water tight housing.

The motor housings purpose is to protect the electric motor from water ingress and subsequent short circuits when used.

The motor housings can either be made to withstand pressure with air inside the motor housing or oil filled with compensation and no need for a pressure housing.

Typical motors used to date are, wolf drill motors, Model aircraft motors, Brush less and other small motors to give high output to power weight ratio.

Propellers have been anything from Model airplane type to air-conditioning fans.

Control has been by means of direct drive from surface, Thyristor control, plc control etc…
